It Hurts Like Hell Until We Figure Out What We Are Doing

The simple truth is that painful memories, regret, and even flashbacks don’t just go away. They are always there. We just learn to manage them better when they come rushing back to us.

We are like boxers who train to take a hit. It hurts like hell until we figure out what we are doing. We learn to manage pain, to block it out. We learn to breathe. We become stronger. Sometimes, if we are lucky, we can sidestep a memory and avoid the agony of being hit hard enough to drop us to our knees; other times, the times when our guard is down, we aren’t so lucky.

We carry these sorts of memories like slow healing bruises, and we hope that the smiles we wear are wide enough to cast those bruises into the shadows where they can be seen only by those who take the time to look closely enough.

      1. AH, it is only occasionally these days (grief settle into you skin and soul after a while, and become who you are now), and I think it helps keep me grateful for what I have in my life now.

  1. This is so true. You can be standing at the summit and along comes a strong wind carrying a flashback and pow! Tumbling down, grasping the grass and mud on the way down, trying to regain your footing. The good news for me is that each time the fall is less far down now. I shake my fist against the winds of the past or simply turn my back to them and let them roar on by. Perhaps it is an aging thing. I hope it means growth. Hugs,

  2. What a great post! We all have these memories that catch us off guard, like a trip wire, and suddenly we are on the ground. I have many memories that sneak in like this. I need to work on the acceptance/forgiveness put that roseelainblog brought up πŸ˜‰

  3. Great post. I can definitely to having bad memories and flashbacks hit me pretty hard after having gone through an abusive relationship. Hope you’re right and it will get better over time

  4. Running away from the demons of the past will only have it haunting us time and again. The solution is in acceptance. Acceptance will help us see it with more clarity so that we can move on with our lesson learnt!
